A few years ago, banks charged these fees mainly for bounced checks. Banks simply rejected debit card purchases if consumers had too little money in their account. But more banks are allowing customers to overdraw with debit card purchases and at ATMs, then hitting them with fees of up to $35, according to the Center for Responsible Lending.
